ProfileThe Mining Commission (Tume ya Madini) is Tanzania's mining regulator, established under the Mining Act, Cap. 123, as amended by the Written Laws (Miscellaneous Amendment) Act 2017, and constituted by Government Notice No. 27 of 7 July 2017. It absorbed the former Minerals Division of the Ministry of Energy and Minerals, the Tanzania Minerals Audit Agency and the Tanzania Diamond Sorting Organisation. Under s.22 of the Mining Act it issues licences, regulates mining and mineral trading, counters smuggling and royalty evasion, and resolves mining disputes; it now reports to the Ministry of Minerals rather than Energy. The hub relies on its published lists of licensed gold buying stations and mineral markets — the operational register for Tanzania's ASM/small-scale gold trade — and on its licensing statistics and directives (e.g. the 2024 domestic-purchase reserve rule).
